Severance issues

ummc quarterly

A letter written by WORDS THAT SING, sent 6 months after an employee was fired, helped her obtain the severance pay she requested and reimbursement of her training expenditure.

Before:

“It took me some time to write this letter because I really wanted to assess my reasons for writing it. After reviewing all the notes I’d taken over the year, after putting aside my anger and disappointment, I still found that part of me (sic) reason for writing this letter is to ask for a severance of 8 weeks, my 20% vested interest in the 401K match and to be reimbursed for an expenditure of $2,000 for the training of subordinate employees under my supervision.

Additionally this letter is meant as a record of my observations while working in the Austin office of ABC Company. I hope that these observations will enlighten you and that they will help you to understand the continuing disparity between Austin and ABC Company.”

After:

“After much consideration and a review of the events of the past year, I’m writing to:

  • Provide my observations about working in the Austin office of ABC Company. I would like to tell you about the difficulties I faced and the continuing discrepancies between the Austin office and the head office of ABC Company.
  • Request severance payment of 8 weeks salary, my 20% vested interest in the 401K program and reimbursement of my expenditure of $2,000 for training employees under my supervision.”
